How can I put chocolate fondue in the base of a fruit topiary? I'm planning my wedding and would like to have a strawberry topiary centerpiece at each table with chocolate in the base pot to dip in. I thought it was simple at first but how can I keep the chocolate warm and melted??? or at the very least are there small warmers I can put the chocolate in separately at the tables?

sarahz replied: "http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=510&f=2813&q=fondue&fromLocation=Search&DIMID=400001&SearchPage=1"

gr8nursern replied: "They have the small fondue pots and even the small chocolate fountains. The problem with the both of these are that they need to be plugged in. Using tea lights will cause the chocolate to burn. I know melted chocolate is more appealing, but maybe if you did something like a ganache that holds heat a little better and is still edible as it cools"

My French Topiary seems to be dying. What can I do to revive it ? My French Topiary plants are beginning to dry and drop their green foliage. They have been living inside the house. Could they be pot-bound ? If I transplant them into a larger pot, does the pot have to be clay ?

Bren replied: "I have horrible luck with those and I have tried everything..I think its just luck?! lol"

bettareckanotice replied: "no idea...do you know how to save a rose bush from dying? i don't, but where i live is super hot. so if you know a way, tell me please."

jessezgl_2005 replied: "they need more humidity or they are simply root bound or both you can easily find out if they are root bound by pulling up on the base of the plant if it the root ball easily moves from the pot or by sticking your finger or knife down inside the edge of the pot and pry it back...if you see roots it needs a bigger pot and clay is best also only go about 2 inches bigger with the pot"

How to plant a 3-Ball Juniper Topiary? I just bought a 3-ball juniper topiary (english boxwood). I understand that I should dig the hole twice the circumference of the largest ball, and not as deep as the trees are planted in the pot from the nursery. However, my question is about plant/tree food. Should I put some sort of special treated or tree food at the bottom of the hole before I plant the trees? Or is the regular ground soil enough?

Steve replied: "Not necessary. It's nice for bulbs when the flower goes dormant or germinates but not so much for trees when the soil is nice and loamy with plenty of nutrients."

My gardenia topiary won't bloom...? It's a small topiary, in a small pot. As per the instructions it came with, I keep the soil moist but not wet, and I don't let it get dry. It has maybe 5-6 buds that look good sized and healthy, but haven't opened up yet. I've had the plant (in it's current healthy condition) for about three weeks. I've tried putting a little bit of liquid fertilizer on it and it has stayed exactly the same. It isn't losing any leaves or buds, it just won't bloom.

Dustoff replied: "Blooming is triggered by the length of night/darkness. Some plants such as mums are very - very sensitive to this. Your gardenia may be out of cycle and somewhat confused about the length of night especially if it has been moved as you have had it for only 3 weeks."

Hibiscus Topiary - they are both dying and the leaves are turning yellow...? I water and add regular fertilizer. The leaves are turning brown and yellow, and are experiencing the "drop bud" - buds form, but don't bloom. The are potted and have great drainage, but not a lot of sun. Could this be the problem?

Green Creek replied: "How much fertilizer are you using? Your plant might not bloom much in shade but it would not turn brown and yellow from being in the shade. You might have a root bound plant or it may be burned from fertilizer."

Ralph replied: "It could be the amount of sunlight, it could also be the nutrient level. When the leaves turn level, do the veins of the leaves stay green? if so it could be magnesium, try adding a tablespoon of epsom salts in a gallon of water. Do you water the plants and flush the old fertilizer out. Thes should be dane once a month to prevent the fertilizer levels from building up and burning the plant. This sounds more likely for you."

Tigger replied: "You might be over feeding and over watering"

How do I know if my plant is completely dead? I have potted indoor mini topiary plant (sorry, don't know the exact name) and I forgot to water it for a few days and the leaves are wilted. Is it dead, or is there a chance it can come back to life?

Patrice replied: "Cut the plant's stem at its base. Then you can be sure it is dead. Sounds like time to get a new one."

Zacking Off replied: "Did it burst into flames? If not its still kicking."

Lincoln6 replied: "Give it water and if it doesn't revive, it's dead."

tofffees replied: "water it a bit and watch it come back to life..........place the pot in a dish of water ,so that the plant doesnot die even if you forget to water it next time!"

What is the best low-maintenance plant/tree to accent my front door? I have a small patio at my front door, and I'd like to accent this entrance with a planter on each side. I was wondering what type of plant (or small tree) would look nice but also be able to survive all types of climates (hot, cold, arid, etc.) The pots I have are medium-sized, so I wouldn't be able to get anything too big or that has the potential for overgrowth. I looked at Lowe's Home & Garden section on its Web site to see what's out there, but it would be like closing my eyes and just pointing to something randomly to pick the "right" one. I tried the Blue Point Juniper (nice topiary), which is supposed to be ideal given what I need. However, both died within a month (didn't transplant well + drought conditions). Any green thumbs out there that can share their expertise?

fukuoka replied: "my green thumb says you should start a pot plantation."

poematics replied: "you might consider artificial topiaries, since this is your entrance and your first impression, they would be ideal and very no maintenence. What's also great is that you can really get alot of bang at christmas and light them up. something tall that resembles the junipers that you had will probably appeal to you again but this time without the hassels."

echoes-in-mint replied: "Your Juniper should've done well in the planter.~but~ No matter what you put in the pots, you will have to make sure they don't get completely dried out. Try choosing dwarf varieties of pines or conifers. Is the pot too small? Do you have new sterile soil in the pot? If you cannot water at all, try adding moisture retaining additives to your potting mix."

somber_pieces replied: "Cacti are quite hardy, and also discourage theft of the plant itself. Flowering cacti might be nice too. cheers"

Transplanting a baby cedar tree? I have two cedar trees growing near my cement patio, and I am going to have to remove them. At first I was just going to dig them up and throw them out, but I wonder if I can transplant them into pots and keep them sort of like topiaries on my front porch. The trees are both about 1 foot tall, and have been growing there for a year or so. When and how can I carefully dig them up and transplant them? Can I put them in pots? How would I care for them in pots? What kind of soil would I use? Any fertilizer, nutrition, etc? How about watering? Will the remain a small size, or grow to break the pot? How big of a pot do I need? If it helps, I live in North Carolina. Any advice would be great, especially if you have links to sites that explain the process, or if you've done it yourself!

pixieotr replied: "chances are when you dig them out, you will kill them by cutting the tap roots, but you can try to move them. they will not do well in pots and need to be planted in the ground as the root system on a cedar tree is extensive and needs room to flourish. try to move them with as much dirt from the original hole as possible and do not disturb the roots any more than absolutly necessary. the will need fed and watered as any other tree, with more water to start. do not fertilize until you know they are getting established, best to wait for about 4 months after noticing new growth so as not to shock the tree. feed with tree spikes or granulated fertilizer sprinkled around the drip line 4x yr and add ironite to the mix to keep it greener."

Kimberly C replied: "Hi: Cedar trees will get big but if you don't want to transplant it into another area of your landscape, you can put it in large planters and keep them pruned. There are a couple of things I suggest to my client when transplanting. Take your shovel and loosen the dirt all the way around the tree. I get down on my hands and knees to find the mother root. This will be your biggest root and you have to be careful you don't damage it. Carefully put your shovel underneath the roots and lift the tree up. Your potting soil should be light weight .(no bark) Add some organic mushroom compost to the potting soil. This is an organic fertilizer that will last up to one year. Get the trees on a good watering schedule and make sure they are kept moist. You can also add a handful of a slow nitrogen six month release fertilizer now and then again in the spring. This will help get the roots settled into the planters. I live in the same zone as you and if you follow these steps you should be fine. I will link you to my website and the proper pruning page as well as my sitemap. Browse through the site map and see if you can find more information to help you with your Cedars as well as any other landscape need. Have a great day and best of luck to you. Kimberly "

Alice in Wonderland Party? Ok I am having an Alice in Wonderland party for my 19th B-day in Aug. I have some ideas but wanted to know if anyone else had any other suggestions. I was thinking about having one long talbe for everyone to sit at and have missmatched chairs around it. Of corse have it set up like a tea party with tea cups and pots red and white roses in a tea pot. Maybe use an up turned tophat and put flowers in that. Have mini cards, mushrooms, skeloton keys and random things along the center of the table. Or another idea was to use several round talbes and decorate them similiar what do you think? I am having it in a Hall so there is alot of room I was going to hang playing cards from fishing line from the celling I was also hoping to get chinnese paper lanterns in bright colors but am not sure where to get them cheeply One thing I really wanted to do was have large flowerpots with dirt in them and stick yard flamingos, butterflys, and maybe a couple with a topiary in them. I also wanted to have some tasty drinks in plastic glasses with brightly colored sugar rims. What kind of drink should I make? If anyone else has any other ideas that would be great. Also I will have cookies that say eat me and drinks will say drink me. And for favors what should I do? I was thinking tiny choclate bunnys and cards which could work for guys and girls then I was thinking of making lip gloss for the girls with alice inspired names but what would i do for the guys

jennifer h replied: "Honestly, it sounds like you have it all covered! You can try orientaltrading.com for most of these supplies. Have fun, it sounds great!"

Juji replied: "Sounds great! I love the idea of the long table-fits in well with the Mad Hatter! Ialso have an idea for a drink-its a lime green punch, super easy, but tastes great! Just mix half gallon green Hawaiian punch with 2-liter Sprite. I always put shaped ice cubes in, too, if you can find some to fit your theme. Hope you have a great time! (and happy early birthday!)"

Cassidy B replied: "the cat ?????????????????????????????????"

Toni replied: "I definitly think the long table, cause that is how it is in the movie. I was thinking for the flower pots, that is what you could have the dessert in. They call it dirt, it is chocolate pudding with crushed up oreos on top so it looks like potting soil and you stick gummy worms and things like that in it. You could have that as place holders and everyone gets their own. With little flower pots and fake flowers. Just a thought! Have a fun party!"

sparklindiamondsatine replied: "Hello, I'm planning on having an Alice in Wonderland themed sweet sixteenth in June and I'm having the same problem thinking of things to do, but here's some ideas that I have come up with: Decorations: Make topiary bushes out of an oasis sphere (can be bought from a florist, if not use styrofoam) and a broom handle. Attach them together and stick in fake white and red roses to create a "painting the roses red" feel. Also use lawn flamingos and hedgehog stuffed toys to have the croquet look. You can also have lots of teapots around. Maybe one big one with the doormouse peeking out of the top (stuffed toy.) Also I have bought an inflatable bottle of the internet (not too expensive) and I am going to attach a drink me label on it with cardboard and string and put it in the room. Decks of cards are a must and they can be placed almost anywhere, on the walls, tables, floor, even hang them from the ceiling with fishing wire if you can reach! Also I have bought A4 size cards from the internet and am going to glue them together to make a house of cards! Also, if you can (I'm currently struggling to find these), get some plastic tea sets and glue them stacked up leaning to the side, it will make a fab centrepiece. Also pocketwatches and clocks are cool to hang around. If you can, find a giant key and you can put it somewhere. Oh, and I almost forgot, I have made out of wood a signpost. I have nailed the sign bits onto the post really wonky so it looks wonderland-like. I have wrote things like "This way", "That way", "Yonder", "Up" and "Down" on them. This looks great! Food: Food can be either finger sandwiches and tea like the tea party, or you can do what I'm doing and just do cakes and biscuits, (as we are having food somewhere else beforehand!) The cakes and biscuits can read Eat me or they can be in the shape of hearts (for the queen of hearts) ,cards , cats or rabbits etc. The drinks can be labeled drink me! Other stuff: You could play flamingo croquet, or card games with your friends. You could even play spin the teapot or bottle but it will have to be again labelled drink me! Everyone will have to be dressed as a character from Alice in Wonderland, but if they are not the dressing up type, tell them that they can dress in foolish attire, for all to admire. This can be bright colours, clothes inside out, big hats etc.! Hope this helps you and enjoy your very merry unbirthday party! hehe!"
